This was in 1541, and was the cause of his removal from
Cambridge; (ii) Mildred, dau. of Sir Anthony Cooke, of
Gidea Hall, Essex, Dec. 21, 1545. Died, at his house in the
Strand, Aug. 4, 1598. Buried at Stamford Baron. Will,

of the Exchequer, clerk of the Council, and secretary of State,
1552. Under Queen Mary he retired abroad, and for a time
lectured in Greek at Strasburg. He was seized in Flanders,
brought to England, and committed to the Tower. Under
threats he abjured Protestantism and was received into the
Romish Church, Oct. 4, 1556. Died in London, Sept. 13,
1557. Buried at St Alban's, Wood St. M.I. there. Known
as one of the principal restorers of Greek learning in England.
