F.R.S., 1763; gold medal. Physician to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, 1770. Practised for a time at St Ives, Huntingdonshire . His examinations for the Smith's prizes were considered 'the most severe test of mathematical skill in Europe ,' but, according to Dr Parr, 'his researches were not adapted to any form of communication by lectures.' Married, 1776, Mary, sister of William Oswell, draper, of Shrewsbury. Author, Miscellanea Analytica de Equationibus Algebraicis et Curvarum Proprietatibus ('one of the most abstruse books written on the abstrusest parts of Algebra,' which made his name famous throughout Europe ) and other mathematical works, most of them in Latin.
