A Manchester banker, 1844-8. Succeeded his father as head of Jones Loyd and Co., bankers, London, 1844 (merged in the London and Westminster Bank, 1864). One of the best-known authorities of his time on matters of finance, the Bank Act of 1844 being 'substantially based on his principles.' The scheme for introducing into England the Continental system of decimal coinage was mainly defeated owing to the active part he took against it. Created Baron Overstone of Overstone and Fotheringay, 1850. Married Aug. 10, 1829, Harriet, dau. of Ichabod Wright, of Mapperly Hall, Notts., and had issue.
