[Only] s. of Thomas, of Charleston, S. Carolina [and Elizabeth Allston]. [B. Aug. 5, 1749, in Prince George's parish, Winyaw, S. Carolina.] Schools [Georgetown and] Eton (Dr Barnard). Adm. at the Middle Temple, where he 'acquired a distaste for the law.' Returned to S. Carolina, 1772, and settled down on the Peach Tree Plantation, N. Santee, which his father presented to him.
Member of first and second Provincial Congresses, 1774-6; of the Constitutional Committee for S. Carolina, 1776; of the first State General Assembly, 1776; and of the Second Continental Congress, 1776-7. Captain in the 1st South Carolina Regt., June 12, 1775.
Member of Committee chosen Feb. 11, 1776, to prepare a form of government for South Carolina, and collaborated in drafting its constitution.
Elected delegate, Mar. 23, 1776, to the Continental Congress by the General Assembly, in succession to his father.
In spite of feeble health, due to a fever contracted during a recruiting campaign, Lynch was present and voted when the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and shortly afterwards affixed his signature to the document, being one of five Middle Templars to do so. Married, May 14, 1772, Elizabeth Shubrick.
After more than two years of illness, took passage, with his wife, for the West Indies towards the close of 1779, expecting to board a vessel there for the South of France.
The ship in which they sailed was never heard of again.
