Said to have joined Hamilton's Force and to have taken part in the defeat of Tilly before Leipzig [ Germany ], 1631 . Accompanied Charles I to Scotland with a contingent, 1639 ; ridiculed for the gorgeous clothes with which he bedecked his troopers. Set on foot 'the first Army plot,' 1640-1 . Fled to France , 1641 . Fashionable courtier. M.P. for Bramber [ Sussex ], 1640 . Royalist poet and writer of plays. A friend of Davenant, who describes him as the greatest gallant and gamester of his day.
