'Had a passion for research which students found inspiring....His chief investigations relate to the endurance of metals under varying stresses, the magnetic property of iron and its alloys, the action of internal combustion engines and the process of explosion in gases.' They were also active in the development of rock-climbing in the British Isles. Killed Aug. 27, 1898, with three of his children, while climbing the Petite Dent de Veisivi in the Val d'Hérens, Switzerland; they were without a guide and the cause of the accident was not known. Buried at Territet. Mrs Hopkinson and her surviving children gave £5000 towards an extension of the Cambridge engineering laboratory as a memorial to her husband and their son.
