Teacher, 1867, and Professor, 1869, of Practical Physiology at University College, London. Succeeded Huxley as Fullerian Professor at the Royal Institution, 1869. It was chiefly owing to him that the Physiological Society was founded in 1875, and the International Congress of Physiologists established in 1889. F.R.S. Secretary of Royal Society, 1881-1903; during his long tenure of that office he greatly strengthened the connection between the Society and the Government. President of the British Association, 1899. K.C.B., 1899. A strong supporter of every form of scientific exploration and expedition. Prominent in the establishment of the International Association of Academies, and in the arrangements for publication of the International Catalogue of Scientific Papers. Member of the Committee appointed by the Colonial Office to advise as to the best means of combating disease. M.P. for London University, 1900-6.
