Hughes, etc., in Christian Socialist and Co-operative movements, and at the Working Men's College. Editor of the New English (later the Oxford) dictionary. A skilled oarsman; President of the National Amateur Rowing Association. With John Beesley, built the first two narrow sculling boats in England, 1845, and introduced the first sculling-four and sculling-eight races, 1886-7. For his 75th birthday the Clarendon Press published An English Miscellany, written by his friends. Author, The Introduction to the Leopold and Royal Shakespeares; the 'Introductions' to the 39 volumes of the Century Shakespeare and of Shakespeare's Life and Work. Edited (with F. W. Clarke) the Old-Spelling Shakespeare and numerous publications for the Roxburghe Club and Rolls Series. Married, 1862, Eleanor Nickel, dau. of George Alexander Dalziel, and had issue.
