Ellis, Robert Leslie. Adm. pens. (age 16) at TRINITY, July 10, 1834. [Youngest] s. of Francis, of Frognal House, Hampstead. B. Aug. 25, 1817, at Bath. Matric. Michs. 1836; Scholar, 1838; B.A. (Senr. Wrangler; 1st Smith's Prize) 1840; M.A. 1843. Fellow, 1840-9. Adm. at the Inner Temple, Aug. 3, 1838. Edited Cambridge Mathematical Journal. Undertook, in conjunction with Heath and Spedding, an edition of Francis Bacon's Works. Author, Roman Aqueducts; Boole's Laws of Thought; On the formation of a Chinese Dictionary; Vegetable Spirals; Comparative Metrology, etc. His health broke down in 1847, and after residing in the south of France returned to England a complete invalid. Resided at Anstey Hall, Trumpington, near Cambridge, from 1853. Gradually lost his sight, but continued to dictate memoirs on mathematical and other subjects, until within a short time of his death.
