C. of Willesden and Kingsbury, 1822-4. C. at Cheltenham, Gloucs., 1824-6. P.C. there, 1826-56; during his 30 years' ministry at Cheltenham he caused five churches to be erected and was one of the founders of Cheltenham College. R. of Hatford, Berks., 1832-6. Dean of Carlisle, 1856-81. P.C. of St Mary's, Carlisle, 1865-8. Built several churches and schools in Carlisle. A popular Evangelical preacher. Dean Close School, Cheltenham, was founded in his memory. Married (1) Anne Diana, 3rd dau. of Rev. John Arden, of Longcroft Hall, Stafford, 1820, and had issue; (2) Mary Antrim, widow of David Hodgson, Dec. 2, 1880. Author, controversial, etc. Bitterly opposed to horse racing and the theatre.
