Mathematical Master at Harrow, 1838-42. Ord. deacon (Ely) June 9, 1839. V. of Forncett St Mary, Norfolk, 1846-53. Bishop of Natal, 1853-83. Worked devotedly to educate the Zulus, providing the black races with a written language. Taught Zulus printing and issued a Zulu grammar, dictionary, translations from the Old and the New Testament, etc. Aroused violent feeling and opposition by his Commentary to the Epistle to the Romans, and his Critical Examination of the Pentateuch. Formally deposed and excommunicated by Dr Gray, Metropolitan Bishop of Capetown, 1863, but confirmed in the possession of his see by the Law Courts. Suffered greatly from misunderstanding and misrepresentation as a result of the invasion of Zululand in 1878. Denounced the Zulu war and exposed the corruption of some Colonial officials and their tyranny to natives.
