Edward Bankes...having married a daughter of the Lord Chancellor had more than the usual share of favours extended to the Great Lawyer's connections.... Although he became enormously rich upon the death of his father-in-law, Mr Bankes continued to hold his preferments for some years after he was incapable of performing the duties attached to them.
