Assistant Master at Eton College, 1885-1903; House Master, 1892-1903; considered 'one of the best ever known at Eton.' Returned to Cambridge; lectured in English literature for Magdalene College and the University. Edited, together with Lord Esher, Selections from the Correspondence of Queen Victoria. C.V.O., 1907. A Livery man of the Fishmongers' Company, 1910; elected to the Company's Council, 1911. Served on the Cambs. County Council. A Renter Warden, 1925. A voluminous writer; his works obtained a wide circulation at home and in America. His literary criticisms Rossetti, FitzGerald, pater and Ruskin (the first three in the English Men of Letters Series), rank among his best works. A member of the Alpine Club. Kept a voluminous Diary, which he left to the College (a selection from it, edited by P. Lubbock was published in 1926).
