Michs. 1835; 41st Wrangler, 1839 (but not admitted to B.A. degree, being a Roman Catholic). Hon. Fellow, 1888. [Adm. at Trinity College, Dublin, Feb. 8, 1840; from Cambridge.] Joined the Irish Bar, but did not practise. Poor Law Commissioner, 1846-52. Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1855-7. M.P. for Co. Carlow, 1852; defeated as a candidate for Limerick, 1858, owing to the opposition of the priests, due to his sympathy with Italian liberty; a close friend of Cavour and Quintino Sella. Thenceforth devoted himself to scientific work, especially in botany and geography. F.R.S., 1868. One of the founders and first President of the Alpine Club, 1858. With Sir Joseph Hooker joined a botanical expedition to Morocco, 1871; travelled as far as the watershed of the Atlas. Made a tour round South America, 1882. Contributed important papers to the Linnean and other Societies. Author, Notes of a Naturalist; Alpine Guide; joint author of Tour to Morocco and the Great Atlas.
