Well known as a geologist and political economist. Studied volcanic districts of Italy , 1818-21. Assumed his wife's name of Scrope, in lieu of Thomson, by Royal Licence, Mar. 22, 1821. F.G.S., 1824; one of the Secretaries, 1825; Wollaston medal, 1867. F.R.S., 1826. M.P. for Stroud (in 10 Parliaments), 1833-67. Author, Political Economy, etc.; wrote many pamphlets, which gained him the sobriquet of 'Pamphlet Scrope.' Married, Apr. 14, 1821, Emma, only child of William Scrope, of Castle Combe, Wiltshire .
