University Lecturer in Persian, 1888-1902. Sir Thomas Adams Professor of Arabic, 1902-26. Achieved extraordinary success as a teacher of Arabic and Persian in the University. F.B.A., 1903. Married and had issue. An Oriental scholar of international repute; his great work on Persian literature is a monument of erudition and accurate scholarship. Made a special study of Babism, obtaining direct evidence as to the origin of the movement from some still surviving followers of the founder, Mirza Ali Muhammad. A whole-hearted sympathiser with Persian reformers. Catalogued the Mohammedan MSS. in the University Library and also in several College Libraries. Edited the History of Ottoman Poetry, by his friend, Elias John W. Gibb. Author, A Traveller's Narrative, written to illustrate the Episode of Bab; A Year among the Persians; Literary History of Persia until the time of Firdausi, etc. Died Jan. 5, 1926, aged 63, at Cambridge.
