Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Dec. 28, 1871. Mathematical Master at Rossall School, 1859-60; at Leamington College, 1860-1. Professor of Mathematics at the Royal College, Mauritius, 1861-7. Studied Old French literature and essay writing. Returned to England and settled in London, 1867. Published a work on Early French Poetry, 1868, and the French Humourists, 1873. Secretary of the Palestine Exploration Fund, 1868-86; Hon. Secretary till 1901. Published (with E. H. Palmer) The History of Jerusalem. Edited a series of miscellaneous biographies of which he wrote Coligny and Whittington. Commenced writing novels in collaboration with James Rice, c. 1872; from 1882 wrote alone 18 novels and several shorter stories in 18 years. As a result of All sorts and conditions of Men, the People's Palace in Mile End, London, was built and opened in 1887. Also the originator of the 'Society of Authors'; first Chairman, 1884. His great work, a new survey of London (founded on Stow and Strype), was begun in 1894. General editor of The Fascinations of London, a series of handbooks to London topography. F.S.A., 1894. Knighted, 1895. President of the 'Hampstead Antiquarian Historical Society.' Vice-President of the 'Art Society.' Resided at Frognal End, Hampstead. For an account of his literary work see D.N.B.
