A member of the famous 'Cambridge Seven' to join the China Inland Mission in 1885-95. Bishop of Western China, 1895-1925. One of the foremost missionaries of his time, who possessed great gifts of organisation; understood the Chinese and was held in great veneration by them. For an account of his life and work see W. W.
