Indian Civil Service Studies, Board of

Although teachers of Hindustani, Hindi and Telegu had been employed by the University earlier, it was not until the new statutes were coming into force that the situation was to some extent regularised. By grace of 10 May 1883 the Board of Indian Civil Service Studies was constituted to supervise the work of the Indian Civil Service candidates at Cambridge. By grace of 4 June 1891 a scheme was approved whereby, with government assistance, teachers were to be employed in Hindustani, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Burmese, Sanskrit, Persian, and Indian History. Other subjects were occasionally taught. By grace of 12 March 1896 the Board was also authorised to supervise the training of the Student Interpreters sent to Cambridge from time to time by the Foreign Office. From 1905 a separate committee (see below) took over this responsibility. By grace of 11 March 1897 the Board of Indian Civil Service Studies was constituted a Special Board of Studies under Statute B, V.3, with power to appoint University Teachers, subject to the consent of the Vice-Chancellor. The list below records only the more permanent appointments, and is correspondingly incomplete, especially for the earlier years. By grace of 14 June 1919 the title 'Lecturer' was substituted for 'University Teacher'. From 1939 the functions of the Board were in abeyance, and all courses suspended.

Teachers Training Syndicate

By grace of 3 April 1879 the Teachers Training Syindicate was appointed to organise courses of lectures on the theory, history and practice of education, and to provide examinations in those subjects upon the results of which certificates of proficiency could be awarded. The lecturers were appointed annually by the Syndicate, subject to confirmation by grace. Teaching in the Practice of Education took the form of short courses or separate lectures from experienced schoolmasters. From 1898 all three components were taught by a single lecturer. From 1920 there was the office of Principal of the Training College and Director of Training.
