On leaving College devoted his energies to the newly established Royal Archaeological Institute. Assistant in Dept. of Antiquities in the British Museum, 1851; Keeper of British and Mediaeval Antiquities and Ethnography, 1866. Specially interested in ceramics, making a collection of English and foreign porcelain and pottery which he presented to the Museum in 1855. In 1892 secured for the Museum the famous enamelled gold cup of the Kings of France and England. Commissioned by the Government to examine and report on the collections of George Petrie, the Irish antiquary, and on the Meyrick collection; a juror in the section of pottery at the paris Exhibition, 1878. F.S.A. 1853; President, 1891. F.R.S., 1874. Member of the Roxburghe Club. One of the founders of the Cambridge Architectural Society and an early member of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. C.B., 1888. K.C.B., 1894. On retirement from the Keepership of the British Museum in 1896 was elected to the Standing Committee.
