His first course of lectures, afterwards published as The Gospel History and its Transmission, dealt with the general contents of the Gospels and the literary relationships between them; opposed the later school of Gospel Criticism, and re-affirmed his early conviction as to the historic value of Mark's record. Took a leading part in researches in the Manichaeism and dealt ably with the revolutionary theories of certain continental scholars as to the origin of the fourth gospel. Chief promoter of the translation of Schweitzer's book, The Quest of the Historical Jesus, by W. Montgomery. A man of vivid personality; on friendly terms with students of all ages and races. Married and had issue. Resided latterly at West Road Corner, Cambridge. Author, ecclesiastical and theological; a regular contributor to the Journal of Theological Studies, and to various foreign periodicals. Died May 11, 1935, at Cambridge.
