WESTMORLAND, JOHN (FANE), EARL OF. Adm. a nobleman at EMMANUEL, Jan. 25, 1776. Eldest s. of John (Hon. LL.D., 1769), 9th Earl of Westmorland (and Augusta, dau. of Lord Montague Bertie), B. June 1, 1759. Schools, Westminster and Charterhouse (Dr Berdmore). Had succeeded his father as 10th Earl, Apr. 26, 1774. M.A. 1778. 'While at the University he formed a friendship with Mr Pitt which continued through the life of that illustrious statesman.' Joint Postmaster-General, 1789. P.C., 1789. Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland , 1790-4; being opposed to Catholic Emancipation, was recalled by Pitt in 1794. K.G., 1793. Master of the Horse, 1795-8. Lord Privy Seal, 1798-1806 and 1807-27.
