Migrated to Christ's, Apr. 28, 1842; Scholar, 1842; B.A. (3 rd Classic ) 1844; M.A. 1847. Fellow of Christ's, 1844-53; Junior Dean, 1845; Steward, 1847; Tutor, 1847-52. Ord. deacon and priest (Ely), 1845. Head Master of Felsted School, 1850-5; Head Master of Bury St Edmund's School, 1855-79. V. of Manorbier, Pembs., 1879-89, when his sight failed and he resigned. Married (1) Dec. 28, 1853, Frances Gertrude, dau. of the Rev. J. G. Helm; (2) July 4, 1871, Emily Snape, dau. of the Rev. W. H. Shelford. Visited Bohemia in 1849 and laid the basis of his Slavonic scholarship. Translated The Queen's Court MSS. and other Ancient Bohemian Poems (which had been discovered by accident in 1817); The Adventures of Baron Wenceslas Wratislaw, and the Diary of an Embassy from King George of Bohemia to Louis XIV . Author, Life of St John Nepomucen; Sketch of John Huss and Sixty Folk Tales from Slavonic Sources, etc. Lived latterly at Southsea, where he died Nov. 3, 1892. M.I. in Bury St Edmund's Cathedral, erected 'by 54 of his old boys, in honour of a great master, a kind teacher and an eminent scholar.' Left to Christ's College his collection of Slavonic books.
