In medical practice at Huntingdon, 1789, and later at Bury St Edmunds; finally settled in London , 1797, relinquishing medical practice for experimental science. Invented the goniometer for measuring the angles of crystals. Patented the camera lucida, 1807, which led to the invention of photography. Discovered the malleability of platinum, which produced him £30,000. A great friend of Sir Humphrey Davy. 'Published 56 papers on pathology, physiology, chemistry, optics, astronomy, mineralogy, crystallography, astronomy, electricity, mechanics, and botany, and almost every paper marks a distinct advance in the particular science involved.' Died Dec. 22, 1828; buried at Chislehurst. Left money to the Royal Society and endowed the 'Wollaston Fund' of the Geological Society. Brother of Francis J. H. (1779) and Charles H. (1789).
