Educated at the Cape; in Mauritius ; and at Harrow.] Matric. Michs. 1837; Hon. Litt.D. 1887; M.A. 1888. Fellow of King's, 1888-95. Professor of Chinese, 1888-95. Ensign, 81st Foot, 1838; transferred to the 42nd Highlanders, 1839; Lieut., 1841; transferred to the 98th Foot. Sailed for China with his Regt., 1842; studied Chinese during the voyage and was appointed interpreter to the Regt. in Hong Kong . Took part in the attack on Chinkiang Fu and in operations round Nanking. Interpreter in Cantonese to the Supreme Court of Hong Kong , 1845-51. Assistant Chinese Secretary to Sir John Davis, Superintendent of Trade, 1846. Vice-Consul at Shanghai, 1852. Negotiated the Treaty of Tientsin after the war of 1857, and played a leading part in subsequent negotiations. C.B., 1862. Acting Chargé d'Affaires at Peking, 1864-5 and 1869-71. Minister Plenipotentiary, 1871. Ambassador at Peking, 1871-83. K.C.B., 1875; G.C.M.G., 1889. Sometime President of the Royal Asiatic Society. Married, July 28, 1868, Amelia, 5th dau. of Sir John Frederick William Herschel, Bart. Author of many works on China and the Chinese language.
