Called to the Bar, May 5, 1852. His principal work was a collation of the various readings of the New Testament. In 1865 gave £500 to encourage geology and for a prize in honour of Adam Sedgwick. In 1864 and 1876 gave oil paintings to the Fitzwilliam Museum, and in 1878 presented to the Museum of Geology the collection of fossils formed by Dr King. Married, May 26, 1857, Rachel Fanny Anne Irby, eldest dau. of George Ives, 4th Lord Boston. Built 'Pinehurst House,' Grange Road, Cambridge, which he named 'Grata Quies.'
