VAUGHAN, BENJAMIN. Adm. pens. at TRINITY HALL, Aug. 8, 1768. [Eldest s. of Samuel, West- India merchant, of London (and Sarah, dau. of Benjamin Hallowell, of Boston, Massachusetts Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Aug. 27, 1765. Studied law at the Temple and medicine in Edinburgh, later entering into a business partnership with his brother-in-law. Sided with the American Colonies and the French revolutionists in Paris in 1790, where he described Marie Antoinette as looking 'well, fat and sulky.' M.P. for Calne, 1792-6. Fled to France to avoid prosecution for treason, 1794; lived in hiding in Paris during the reign of terror, but was discovered and imprisoned for a month. Went to Geneva, whence he wrote a letter to Robespierre, urging him to surround France with a fringe of free and allied States; this letter was subsequently alleged to be proof that Vaughan was a spy of Pitt's. Went to America , 1798. Married June 30, 1781, Sarah, dau. of William Manning, and had issue. Author of a collective edition of the works of Benjamin Franklin.
