Died there of fever, July 25, 1799; buried in the Theseum. M.I. His (Latin) epitaph was composed by Lord Elgin. As the result of the efforts of Lord Byron and others, a block of marble, cut from the bas reliefs of the Parthenon, was erected over his grave. Had kept extensive journals, recording the results of his archaeological and classical research; these were deposited with Thomas Thornton (the writer on Turkey ) at Pera. Lord Elgin, on arriving at Constantinople as ambassador to the Porte, ordered the journals and Tweddell's collections to be sent to him.
