Cadet, Bengal Army, 1823; Ensign, 1824; transferred to the Cavalry, 1825; Lieut., 1825; Brevet Captain, 1839. Married, June 29, 1829, Mary, youngest dau. of William Spottiswoode, Laird of Glenfernate, Perthshire , and had issue. Served in the first Afghan War, 1838-41. Taken as hostage, and present at conferences with Akban Khan and other chiefs; assassinated, with Sir W. Macnaghten, at Kabul, Dec. 23, 1841. His widow and seven children were handed over for safe conduct to Akbar Khan at the beginning of the retreat from Kabul; after 10 months of captivity they were rescued by the arrival of the Force under General Pollock.
