Called to the Bar, May 11, 1804. Migrated to Lincoln's Inn, Dec. 12, 1806. Practised as a Chancery Barrister, but, being 'plagued with a bad temper,' did not attract clients. Married, May 23, 1809, Frances, dau. of the Rev. William Milton, R. of Heckfield, Hampshire . Lost money heavily on a farm which he leased near Harrow, and his monetary expectations were destroyed when his maternal uncle married late in life and had a family. Mrs Trollope went to America in 1827 and endeavoured to retrieve the family fortunes by starting a bazaar at Cincinnati. This, too, failed for want of capital and on her return to England in 1831 the bailiffs were in the house. Trollope sailed for Ostend in 1834, followed by his wife and children. They lived in the Chateau d'Hondt near Bruges, Mrs Trollope supporting the family by her novels. Trollope started his Encyclopaedia Ecclesiastica, of which he succeeded in bringing out three numbers before his death, Oct. 23, 1835, at Bruges. Father of the novelist and of Henry (1830).
