| Thornton, Robert John. Adm. pens. (age 18) at TRINITY, June 23, 1786. [Younger] s. of Bonnell (Christ Church, Oxford, 1743), of London (and Sylvia, dau. of John Brathwaite). School, Chesterton, Cambridge. Matric. Michs. 1786; M.B. 1793. At Guy's Hospital; also studied abroad and in Edinburgh. M.D., St Andrews, 1805; L.R.C.P., 1812. Practised in London from 1797. Physician, Marylebone dispensary, where he is said to have introduced the use of digitalis in cases of scarlet fever. Lecturer on medical botany at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals. Published his New Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus, and ruined himself by the lavish scale on which the work was produced. Held a lottery for the benefit of his botanical works, 1811. Married and had issue. Author, The Politician's Creed; The Temple of Flora; The Philosophy of Medicine; Facts decisive in Favour of the Cow Pock, etc. Died Jan. 21, 1837, in London .
