Toured the Northern and Western Highlands, 1786, and published (1804), A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England and Great Part of the Highlands of Scotland (noticed rather unfavourably by Scott in the Edinburgh Review ). Visited France , 1802, and was introduced to Napoleon, to whom he presented a pair of pistols. A Sporting Tour of France was published, 1806.
Visited France again in 1814, with a party of sportsmen and a pack of hounds; hired the Chateau de Chambord, 1816, and bought an estate at Pont-sur-Seine.
Styled himself Prince de Chambord and Marquis de Pont.
Sold Thornville Royal to Lord Stanton in 1805.
Lived at Falconer's Hall, Bedfordshire , Baythorpe, Yorkshire , and Skypark, Wiltshire . Married (2) 1806, Eliza Cawston, of Mundon, Essex , by whom he had a son.
Resided latterly in lodgings in Paris.
Died there, Mar. 10, 1823.
Left almost all his property to his illegitimate daughter, Thornvillia Diana Thornton, but the validity of his will was not established.
