Well known as an agriculturist.
Helped to found the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, 1837 (President, 1862). Succeeded to the family estates of Kirby Hall, 1853.
One of the founders of the Royal Agricultural Society, 1838, taking an active part in its affairs until 1873 (Member of Council, 1838-58; Trustee, 1858-74). Began, 1845, a series of experiments on the power of soil in absorbing ammonia: discovered the importance of covered fold-yards for protecting cattle.
