Thompson, Thomas Perronet. Adm. pens. at QUEENS', July 2, 1798. Of Yorkshire . [Eldest s. of Thomas, M.P., merchant and banker, of Hull (and Philothea Perronet, dau. of William Briggs). B. Mar. 15, 1783, at Hull. School, Hull Grammar (Joseph Milner).] Matric. Michs. 1798; B.A. (7 th Wrangler ) 1802; M.A. 1806. Fellow, 1806. Midshipman in H.M.S. Isis, 1802, on the Newfoundland Captured in an attack on Buenos Ayres, July 5, 1807, and after a short imprisonment returned to England. Appointed Governor of the Colony of Sierra Leone , but his efforts to suppress the evils of the apprenticeship system which superseded slavery were ill received, and the Government recalled him within two years. Joined the 14th Light Dragoons as Lieut., and served in Spain ; on the conclusion of peace exchanged into the 17th Light Dragoons, then serving in India . Major, 65th Regt.; Lieut.-Col., 1829; Col., 1846; Major-General and General, 1868. On returning to England in 1822 devoted himself to literature and politics. F.R.S., 1828. Proprietor of the Westminster Review, 1829. M.P. for Hull, 1835-7; for Bradford, 1847-52 and 1857-9. Married, 1811, Anne Elizabeth, dau. of the Rev. T. Barker, of York. Author, Catechism on the Corn Laws (which passed through 18 editions between 1827 and 1834); Geometry without Axioms; Theory of Parallels; On the Principles and Practice of just Intonation with a view to the abolition of Temperament, etc. Died Sept. 6, 1869, at Blackheath.
