Wrote for The Times and other journals and contributed to Punch. Published numerous sketches, etc., 1840-7. Vanity Fair appeared in serial form, 1847-8; Pendennis, 1848-50; Esmond, 1852; The Newcomes, 1853; The Rose and the Ring, 1854; The Virginians, 1857-9. Lectured in America , 1852-5. Editor of The Cornhill, 1860-2. Married, Aug. 20, 1836, Isabella Gethin Creagh, dau. of Col. Shawe, of Doneraile, Co. Cork ; after the birth of their 3rd daughter, 1840, his wife became insane and he separated from her.
Resided latterly at 2, Palace Green, Kensington.
Died, suddenly, Dec. 23, 1863.
