[Educated at small schools at Hastings and in London . Assistant Master at a school at Peckham and later at Wimbledon, during which time he attended evening classes at University College, London , whence he graduated B.A. 1842; M.A. 1844.] Matric. Michs. 1844; B.A. ( Senior Wrangler and 1st Smith's prize) 1848; Burney prize, 1848; M.A. 1851; Adams prize, 1871; Sc.D. 1883. Fellow, 1849-64; Hon. Fellow, 1874. Adm. at the Inner Temple, June 10, 1857. F.R.S. 1862. Author of excellent text-books on Algebra, Euclid, the Calculus, which went through many editions and were translated into many languages; also of History of the Calculus of Variation; History of the Mathematical Theory of Probability ; etc. His Algebra appeared in 1858, whereupon Thomas Lund published a pamphlet, 'An exposure of a recent attempt at bookmaking,' alleging plagiarisms from James Wood's Algebra, as edited by Lund. Todhunter does not seem to have published a reply, but in the Preface to his second edition, 1860, he makes full acknowledgement of the use he had made of Wood's Algebra . In his old age (1881-3) wrote a book on Arithmetic; it was not published, but the MS. is in St John's College Library. A linguist, and well versed in the History of philosophy. Married, Aug. 13, 1864, Louisa Anna Maria, eldest dau. of Admiral George Davies, R.N. Died Mar. 1, 1884, at Cambridge. M.I. in ante-chapel of St John's College. J. E. B.
