Ensign, 3rd Foot Guards, 1795; Capt., 31st Foot, 1798; 12th Light Dragoons, 1798; Capt., 7th Light Dragoons, 1799; Major, 17th Light Dragoons, 1804; Lieut.-Col., 42nd Foot, 1804; Brevet-Col., 1813; Major-General, 1819. Served in Holland , 1799, in Egypt , 1801, in Pomerania and Zealand, 1809; in the Peninsula, 1809. C.B. 1813. Served in Portugal , Egypt , Pomerania and the Baltic , and Spain . Lord Lieutenant for Renfrewshire , 1820-2. Elected as Representative Peer for Scotland , 1806, but was unsuccessful in 1807 and did not sit again in Parliament.
