After King Otto of Greece was expelled in 1862, the throne was offered to, and refused by, Prince Alfred (second son of Queen Victoria); the authorities in Greece then seriously considered the possibility of asking Stanley to accept it; 'the Greeks really want to make our friend Lord Stanley their king,' Disraeli wrote in 1863.
Married, July 5, 1870, Mary Catherine, Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury, dau. of the 5th Earl De La Warr, and widow of the 2nd Marquess of Salisbury.
