An ardent follower of the agitator, O'Connell, who appointed him 'head pacificator'; arrested and tried with O'Connell, 1843.
Shortly after O'Connell's death, attempted suicide by jumping from Waterloo Bridge but was rescued, dying a few days later at Peele's coffeehouse, Fleet Street, June 15, 1848. 'One of the most picturesque figures in the History of Irish popular movements.' Known as 'Honest Tom Steele.' Author, Practical Suggestions for the Improvement of the Navigation of the Shannon . Buried beside O'Connell in Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin.
