Smith (or Wynn-Carrington), the Hon. Charles Robert Wynn. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, Feb. 9, 1861, as Carington. [Eldest] s. of Robert John Smith (1811), Baron Carrington (and Charlotte Augusta Annabella, dau. of Lord Willoughby of D'Eresby). B. May 16, 1843, in London. School, Eton. Matric. When a young man he thrashed 'a scoundrel of a newspaper editor' who had written in a defamatory manner about his father; at the Central Criminal Court he was told that he had done extremely wrong, but that it was difficult to see how he could have acted otherwise, and he was discharged. Capt., the Royal Horse Guards; retired, 1865. M.P. for High Wycombe, 1865-8. Succeeded his father as 3rd Baron Carrington, Mar. 17, 1868. Accompanied the Prince of Wales (afterwards King Edward VII) as aide-de-camp, to India, 1875. Authorized by Royal Licence 1880 to continue the use of the name Carington instead of Carrington; by Royal Licence, 1896, took the name Wynn-Carrington instead of Carington. Capt., Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms, 1881-5. Governor of New South Wales, 1885-90. Lord Chamberlain of the Household, 1892-5. Joint Hereditary Great Chamberlain of England, 1879. Died, s.p.m., June 13, 1928, when the marquessate and earldom became extinct and the barony devolved upon his brother.
