Christopher SMART Adm. sizar (age 17) at PEMBROKE, 20 Oct., 1739. S. of Peter, late of Barming, Kent , gent. B. 11 Apr., 1722, at Shipbourne, Kent . Schools, Maidstone [ Kent ] and Durham [ Co. Durham ] (Mr Richard Dongworth). Matric. 1739 ; B.A. 1743/4 ; M.A. 1747 . Fellow, 1745 . Won the Seatonian prize, 1750-3, and again in 1755 . The well-known poet. Married Anna Maria, dau. of William Carman, a printer, of Reading [ Berkshire ]. Introduced by Dr Burney to John Newbery, the bookseller, for whom he conducted The Midwife or Old Woman's Magazine, 1751-3, and other periodicals. Fell into poverty and ill-health and was twice confined in a mad-house. Visited by Dr Johnson. Died 18 May, 1770, in the King's Bench [ London ]; buried in St Paul's churchyard [ London ].
