Called to the Bar, Jan. 26, 1853, but never practised. Took up geology as a career, and travelled extensively studying ornithology. Assumed the surname of Hudleston, by Royal Licence, 1867. Helped to found a marine laboratory at Cullercoats, Northumberland. Undertook some dredging in the English Channel, 1886-7. Secretary, Geologist Assoc., 1874-7; President, 1881-3. F.G.S., 1867; Secretary, 1886-90; President, 1892-4. F.R.S., 1884. Wollaston medal, R.G.S., 1897. President, Geological Section, British Association, 1898.
