School, Jesuit College, Clongoweswood.] Matric. Michs. 1839. Joined the Comet Club, a society with literary aims, formed by a party of young Irishmen. Sub-Editor of The Comet, a satirical weekly paper directed against the Established Church of Ireland. Arrested, with the editor, for libel, 1833, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. Called to the Irish Bar, 1835. Adm. at the Inner Temple, Apr. 20, 1841. Called to the Bar, May 1, 1846. On the Home Circuit. Abandoned the Law for journalism. Representative of the Constitutional newspaper, in Paris and Madrid, 1836-7. Parliamentary reporter of the Morning Herald. Proprietor and editor of the Independent (of London and Cambridge). Wrote frequently in various periodicals under the signatures [p.486] of 'The Irish Whiskey-Drinker' and 'The Knight of Innishowen.' Married, about 1869, the widow of Col. Shrubrick, a wealthy Anglo-Indian officer, and spent some years in travelling on the Continent. Retired to the Charterhouse, where he died May 29, 1882.
