Fellow of Sidney, 1804. Lord Almoner's Professor of Arabic, 1815-21. Served as British Chaplain at Constantinople, 1804-6, also at Smyrna, 1810-14. Travelled much in the East. While in Smyrna discovered a figure on a rock which he identified with Herodotus' Sesostris. An admirable classical scholar, and well acquainted with French, German, and Italian, as well as with Arabic, Turkish, and Hebrew. Had also a considerable reputation as a geographer and botanist.
