Aug. 27, 1877 in London. School, Eton. Matric. Michs. 1895; B.A. 1898; M.A. 1902. Studied engineering at the L. and N.W.R. works at Crewe. F.R.G.S.; F.R.Met.S.; M.I.C.E.; A.M.I.M.E. A pioneer in the early days of motor-cars; successful competitor in numerous races in England and abroad; several times established world's record for speed. Made 160 balloon ascents; won French Aero Club medal for longest balloon journey, 1906 (Paris to Shernborne, Norfolk). Captain, London Section of the Army Motor Reserve. Head of the firm of C. S. Rolls, Earls Court. Founder, and technical managing director of, Rolls-Royce, Ltd. Said to have been the first person to drive a car in Cambridge.
