Entered the Army under the Earl of Essex, 1642 . Received a commission as Captain and raised a troop of Horse in the County of Essex . Joined the Earl of Manchester's Army, 1643 . Fought at Naseby [ Northamptonshire ]. M.P. for Cirencester [ Gloucestershire ], 1649 . Inclined to the views of the Fifth Monarchy Men; deprived of his command and imprisoned for opposing Cromwell's government. Restored to his command in 1659, but cashiered by Monck for resisting the Restoration. Arrested during the excitement caused by Venner's plot, 1661 ; remained in confinement, till 1665 . Married (1) Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Edmund Hampden, Knt.; (2) Lady Anne Kerr, dau. of Robert, Earl of Ancrum. His s.
