Lost his money by failure of a New Zealand bank, 1866, and in order to support his family (he had married whilst an undergraduate), was forced to write articles on astronomy for popular scientific journals.
Taught mathematics for a time at a private military school at Woolwich, and lectured in America and Australia.
Married, 2ndly, in America, 1881, Mrs Robert J. Crawley, and settled at her home in Missouri.
Moved to Orange Lake, Florida, 1887.
Author, Saturn and his System; Handbook of the Stars; Half-Hours with a Telescope; etc.
Died Sept. 12, 1888, of yellow fever, in a New York hospital, while on his way to England.
