Surveyor-General of the Victualling Office, 1665 . A zealous reformer of abuses. Secretary of the Admiralty, 1673-9, and 1686-9 . M.P. for Castle Rising [ Norfolk ], 1673-9 ; for Harwich [ Essex ], 1679, and 1685-7 . Committed to the Tower of London [ London ] on a charge of complicity with the Popish plot, 1679 ; released, 1680 . Retired after the Revolution and lived mostly at Clapham [ London ]. The 'Diary' remained in cipher in Magdalene College until 1825 when it was deciphered by John Smith and edited by Lord Braybrooke. An enlarged edition by Mynors Bright appeared, 1875-9 . The original is in the Pepysian Library at Magdalene. The Bodleian Library at Oxford also contains fifty volumes of his manuscripts.
