| Morrison, Alfred. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, Oct. 15, 1839. [2nd s. of James, M.P., head of the firm of Morrison, Dillon and Co., of Fore Street, London (for whom see D.N.B.) (and Mary Anne, dau. of Joseph Todd, of London). B. Apr. 28, 1821. Educated in Edinburgh.] Matric. Michs., 1839. Of Fonthill House, Tisbury, Wilts. J.P. and D.L. for Wilts; High Sheriff, 1857. His houses at Fonthill and Carlton House Terrace, London, 'were full of rich Persian carpets, fine examples of Chinese porcelain, Greek gems and gold work, and miniatures; but he specially interested himself to seek out artists' craftsmen in all countries and employed them for years in the slow and careful production of masterpieces of cameo-cutting, inlaying of metals, and enamelled glass.' Also formed an extensive collection of engravings, and a small but choice collection of pictures. In later life accumulated an extraordinary collection of autographs and letters, of great historical and literary value, such as the correspondence between Nelson and Lady Hamilton and the papers of Sir Richard Bulstrode. Married, Apr. 12, 1866, Mabel, dau. of the Rev. R. S. C. Chermside, R. of Wilton, Wilts. Died Dec. 22, 1897, at Fonthill House. Father of Hugh (1886); brother of Francis (1845) and of Charles (1835).
