Frontier commanded the Mlanje and Chirad Zulu expeditions in British Central Africa, 1893-4; afterwards served in N.W. Rhodesia; mentioned in despatches. Deputy Commissioner and Consul-General, British Central Africa, 1897-1902. Inspector-General, King's African Rifles, 1901-7. Commanded the Somaliland Field Force, 1903-4; Acting Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Nyasaland, 1907-8. For some time Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief, Nyasaland Protectorate; Governor and Commander-in-Chief, 1910-13. Governor of Jamaica, 1913-18. Governor of Ceylon, 1918-35.
